Reviews
Luminous Dash
Marc Neys is what you call a versatile artist. Painting, poetry, video art and therefore also a musician. Through the interaction between different artistic media, the Kruibeekaar is responsible for a cartload of releases. Sometimes with Peter Verwimp aka Ashtoreth via KRUIP, or solo as here on Tides . The number of releases that Neys has to his name is almost impossible to keep track of. Although fascinated by the qualitative, Marc does not give a damn what others think. Take it or leave it, or just be welcome in the mysterious, often dark, not immediately graspable and at the same time magical world of Marc Neys.
In his latest work, Marc plays a guide who invites the listeners into a deeply emotional landscape where thoughts are like ebb and flow. Things that come and go, that you see coming towards you but disappear in no time like snow in the sun. As if they were never there. The same thing happens with our thoughts and it is exactly that strange journey of personal experiences and emotions that Neys wants to take you to.
Opinions will be divided on how to best describe Tides . There are enough characteristics of ambient, but at the same time it feels like a collection of soundscapes. The latter can sometimes lead to boredom for many artists, due to monotonous pinging. Not with Marc, the melody is always retained, even though this term is a very broad concept in his case.
Tides consists of a collage of all kinds of sounds. Sometimes it takes a few extra listens to hear the coherence – that's how it goes with non-linear music – but it is mainly the beauty that stands out. Sometimes beautiful in all its simplicity and then again grandiose. Apocalyptic sounds in which fear is paramount. Threatening, sometimes hopeful. At times it sounds like a Hollywood soundtrack and then it becomes minimally neo-classical again. Tragic, fatalistic, in short the beauty of tristesse. Or how ebb and flow can also be a rollercoaster of emotions.
