Slow Up, Speed Down
The tracks on this album were all assembled during 2021, with a deliberate focus on slowness, space and stasis. My goal was to construct pieces that were less detail-oriented, more smudged and blurred, like distant indistinct sounds carried by the wind.
For this reason, sound sources were often pitched down and time-stretched into elongated drones, while trying to maintain harmonics that simmered just under the surface. These buried melodies are intended to be covert, hidden messages to the listener’s ears.
I wanted to create tracks that implied motion, but a subtle motion in otherwise stillness, like the illusion of fluidity in a heat haze. Mostly, I wanted to make an album of unhurried music that was happy taking its time, each track existing in the moment, slowing up and speeding down.

Darren McClure
Darren McClure is from Northern Ireland, now living in Matsumoto, Japan. His audio work focuses on texture, space and atmosphere. Sound sources are both analogue and digital, hardware and software, incorporating found sounds and field recordings to lend an organic, tactile quality to the material. His main intent is to create music to zone out to and zone into, a balance of widescreen drones and more minimal, abstract ambience.
He has released solo and collaborative work on a number of labels, including Dragons Eye, Glistening Examples and n5MD. His music has also been used in conjunction with video artwork and documentary shorts.

Luminous Dash
Darren McClure is afkomstig uit Noord-Ierland maar woont al een tijdje in Japan. Sinds 2019 maakt hij muziek waarin hij zich focust op textuur, ruimte en atmosfeer. McClure zoekt een balans tussen drone en meer minimaal, abstracte ambient. Op zijn debuutalbum A Mere Fraction ging hij op ontdekkingstocht tussen het gevoel voor tijd en plaats. Elke song was gemaakt ronde geluiden die gelinkt zijn aan het geheugen van de opname. Voor dit nieuwe album ging hij inspiratie halen bij de traagheid en de stilstand.
Op de zes tracks op dit album heeft McClure zich minder gefocust op de details waardoor het wat meer wazige songs zijn die klinken als verre onduidelijke geluiden die gedragen worden door de wind. Die geluiden bevatten verborgen berichten. Het is vooral muziek om bij te onthaasten, elke track bestaat in het moment.
Dat alles klinkt wat mysterieus en dat is het album ook. Elke song wordt gebouwd rond een monotone klank die langzaamaan begint te evolueren. Dat terwijl er op de achtergrond subtiele soundscapes de nummers iets meer inkleuren. Het geheel klinkt vrij intens, krachtig en sfeervol.
Voor de één zullen de stukken van Darren McClure serieus op zijn zenuwen werken voor de ander is dit heel boeiend. Wij hebben ons in elk geval geen moment verveeld tijdens de beluistering van Slow Up Speed Down elke track is een boeiend pareltje van subtiliteit en fijngevoeligheid.
